Challenge: Create a scale 3D-printed forest for hands-on forestry education and demonstration.

The University of Montana Forestry Department was looking for a unique way to use 3D printing for education and they approached Acuity Design. Could Acuity create a modular 3D printed forest that could be displayed at different locations and in different configurations for demonstration purposes? The Acuity team designed each piece of the forest with surface modeling techniques in Solidworks. They then created an assembly and made a photo-realistic digital render so the UM Forestry Department could get an idea of the end result and give the go ahead to make each of the pieces. Acuity fired up the 3D printers and got to making more than 100 different 3D-printed parts. The forest model’s base was made from powder-coated steel and each 3D-printed tree had a magnet hidden in the trunk. The 3D printed forest has been put to good use for hands-on classroom learning in UM Forestry Department.
